Lake Mattie Marsh

Dr. W.L. Carter, Jr., a retired Winter Haven, Florida veterinarian, donated a large wetland tract in the Lake Mattie Marsh to Green Horizon Land Trust. The preserve is east of Lake Mattie on the south side of State Road 557A between Lake Alfred and Polk City.

The marsh is located within the Green Swamp, which is the source of five major rivers; Peace, Withlachooche, Hillsborough, Ocklawaha and arguably, the Kissimmee.

The Green Swamp and its river systems are of hydrologic importance to central Florida, both in terms of surface water and ground water resources. Swamps, flood plains and headwaters serve as natural flood detention areas while uplands serve as areas for recharge. Typical plants within the marsh are, Primrose, pickerel weed, duck potato and saw grass.

The marsh is held by Green Horizon to assist in the protection of water quality in Lake Mattie; provide habitat for the many wetland species of birds and animals; and as a natural corridor for wildlife migration.

Dr. Carter has a love for the land and recognizes the importance of the preservation of such a large wetland site. Dr. Carter chose to donate the land to Green Horizon to be held in perpetuity for the public benefit. The donation accomplishes several purposes; the preservation of the land, a deduction from his federal income taxes, a reduction in estate taxes and relief from ad valorem taxes. Through his generous gift, the quality of life of the citizens of Florida has been greatly enhanced for generations to come.
